Floridians 50 and Older Concerned about
Retirement

(INTRO)
A new survey of Floridians
age 50 or older finds an older population with bright
dreams of traveling and spending time with children
and grandchildren or pursuing hobbies. But the Great
Recession has forced them to put those dreams on hold.
Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida interim state director, says
of those Floridians age 50 or older who plan to delay
retirement, more than one in four doesn't expect to
ever retire.

THIS SURVEY PAINTS A PICTURE
OF FLORIDIANS AGE 50 PLUS WHO ARE HAVING TO DEFER THEIR
DREAMS IN A TOUGH ECONOMY. WHILE OLDER FLORIDIANS WOULD
LIKE TO ENJOY RETIREMENT, FOR 44 PERCENT OF THOSE SURVEYED,
THIS IS A DREAM DELAYED OR SLIPPING OUT OF REACH, IF
THE ECONOMY DOES NOT IMPROVE. OUR ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED
52 YEARS AGO BY A RETIRED PRINCIPAL WHO FOUND A FORMER
COLLEAGUE REDUCED TO LIVING IN A CHICKEN COOP. FLORIDIANS
ARE WORRIED THOSE DARK DAYS MAY BE COMING BACK.
