Later this month, thousands
will travel to Washington, DC to witness the dedication
of the Dr Martin Luther King Jr. memorial. As the nation
celebrates this milestone moment in American History,
Washingtonians honor the many African Americans who
shaped the Nation's Capital with the unveiling of its
100 marker on the African American Heritage Trail, Washington,
DC.
Jane Freundel Levey, director
of heritage programs at Cultural Tourism DC, says the
designation is an important milestone for all of DC.

THE ONE HUNDRETH PLAQUE,
ON THE SITE OF THE FIRST ALL AFRICAN AMERICAN FIRE STATION
IN WASHINGTON, D.C., IS JUST ONE OF ONE HUNDRED STORIES
HIGHLIGHTED ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE TAIL. THROUGH
THIS TRAIL, D.C. VISITORS AND RESIDENTS CAN WITNESS
FAMOUS HISTORICAL FIGURES, FROM FREDERICK DOUGLASS AND
DUKE ELLINGTON TO THE POLITICIANS, BUSINESSMEN, INTELLECTUALS,
AND MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE SHAPED D.C. AND NATIONAL HISTORY.
