California Healthcare Workers Vote
March 2008
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
In an unprecedented election,
California nursing home and homecare workers overwhelmingly
have voted to remain members of United Healthcare Workers-West.
They demonstrated their unwillingness to be forcibly
transferred to another branch of the Service Employees
International Union. Despite widespread interference,
99 percent of nursing home and 96 percent of homecare
workers who voted agreed that staying in the U-H-W would
be best for them, their families and, most importantly,
the people they serve.
U-H-W member Patrick Forte
(FOUR-tay) explains.
(FORTE)
IT WAS JUST SO EMPOWERING
THAT WE ARE FINALLY LETTING PEOPLE KNOW THAT HEY, THIS
IS OUR UNION, AND WE'RE TAKING A STAND. THE VOTE SIGNIFIES
THAT THOSE WHO WOULD SEEK TO DIVERT OUR PROCESS OF ONE
VOTE, ONE MEMBER, US HAVING A VOICE AT OUR WORKSITE,
LETS THEM KNOW THAT WE ARE GOING TO STAND UNITED.
Sal Rosselli, president of
United Healthcare Workers-West, adds.
(ROSSELLI)
THESE WORKERS IN A VERY DEMOCRATIC
WAY, SUPERVISED BY A THIRD-PARTY SECRET BALLOT VOTE,
VOTED TO STAY UNITED WITH HOSPITAL WORKERS.
