(INTRO)
Hospital buildings can heal,
according to the first comprehensive report to look
at the impact of the physical environment on child patients
in health care settings. Evidence for Innovation, Transforming
Children's Health through the Physical Environment is
produced by the National Association of Children's Hospitals
and Related Institutions in partnership with the Center
for Health Design.
Lawrence McAndrews, president
and CEO of the children's hospitals association, says
physical environment affects the clinical, physiological,
psychosocial and safety outcomes among child patients
and families.
(MCANDREWS)
THE EXCITING NEWS IS THAT
WELL DESIGNED HOSPITALS CAN ACTUALLY INCREASE PATIENT
SAFETY AND QUALITY AND REDUCE ANXIETY AND STRESS FOR
CHILD PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. PARENTS SEEKING HOSPITAL
CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN SHOULD LOOK FOR SINGLE-PATIENT
ROOMS, ACCESS TO GARDENS AND OUTDOOR SPACE, AGE APPROPRIATE
PLAY AREAS AND PAIN DISTRACTIONS LIKE CALMING MUSIC.

Findings from the report
are being presented this week at a Children's Hospitals
Facilities Design Conference in Denver. For more information,
