(INTRO)
America is facing a high school
dropout crisis. Nationwide, nearly one in three high
school students drop out before graduating. A new report
released by America's Promise Alliance documents only
about half of all kids served by the main school systems
in the nation's 50 largest cities graduate from high
school.
Marguerite Kondracke, president
and CEO of the Alliance, says they are combating the
problem head-on with the launch of a Dropout Prevention
campaign.

WE'RE WORKING TO HELP YOUNG
PEOPLE STAY IN SCHOOL. WE'LL BE CONVENING SUMMITS IN
EVERY STATE OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS, BUT THIS IS MORE
THAN SUMMITS. EACH STATE OR CITY WILL CREATE THEIR OWN
ACTION PLAN TO END THE DROPOUT CRISIS. NO ONE CAN SOLVE
THIS ALONE, BUT IF WE WORK TOGETHER - PARENTS, TEACHERS,
BUSINESS LEADERS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, CHILD ADVOCATES,
AND YOUNG PEOPLE AS WELL - WE CAN SEE MORE OF YOUTH
GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL READY FOR COLLEGE, WORK AND
LIFE.
