BING END OF YEAR SEARCH TRENDS

~ Searches for Celebrities and Entertainment Events Dominate in 2011 ~

November 2011

(Redmond, WA, November 28, 2011) - 2011 was the year of musical superstars, continued celebrity fascination, unfortunate human tragedy, and new royalty. From rising stars and weddings to intense trials and natural disasters, people searched Bing with terms that mark the year's most important people, places and moments in time.

  • Most Searched People - Bieber fever turned out to be contagious, making Justin Bieber the most searched person on Bing in 2011, moving up from the #6 spot in 2010. After not even cracking the top 50 in 2010, Jennifer Lopez had a triumphant return to popularity in 2011 as the 5th most searched person on the list. Katy Perry (from #26 to #7)and Selena Gomez (from #50 to #11), both also seeing significant gains.

  • Most Searched News - From the high profile trial of Casey Anthony (#1), to news of the deaths of Osama Bin Laden (#2) and Amy Winehouse (#5), people were hungry for information on hard news stories as well. Of the natural disasters in the news, Hurricane Irene (#3) captured the most attention, followed by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami (#4) and the Joplin tornado (#6).

  • Most Searched Sports Figures - Girl power! The boys got served by Maria Sharapova in sports-related queries, beating out Tiger Woods and Brett Favre! In other sports, Derek Jeter ruled the diamond, Kobe Bryant outdueled Lebron James on the hardwood and a retired Brett Favre won top honors on the gridiron.

  • Most Searched Celebrity Events - Not surprisingly when it came to celebrity events, searches for the Royal Wedding came out on top with other "events" of interest including the final Harry Potter movie, Kim Kardashian's wedding, Beyonce's baby bump and, and Twilight sweethearts, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

  • Most Searched Consumer Electronics - Xbox was the most searched consumer electronics product of the year on Bing, followed by Kindle and Playstation. Interestingly enough, one of the most searched consumer electronics of the year doesn't even exist yet! Speculations about the iPhone 5 came in as the fourth most searched consumer electronic.
