Environmental Impact of Keeping Lawns Green

May 2008

Stations, the following is a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…

(INTRO)

Did you know that a lawn mower running for one hour emits the same amount of pollution as 40 automobiles running for one hour? And keeping the typical American lawn green requires one to two inches of water per week, which adds more than 10,000 gallons a summer for an average lawn.

Miriam Goldberger, president of Wildflower Farm and maker of Eco-Lawn, says there are options that are environmentally safe.

(GOLDBERGER)

IN 2003, ALMOST TWO BILLION DOLARS WAS SPENT ON HERBICIDES AND PESTICIDES IN THE U.S. WE HAVE FOUND A WAY TO REDUCE WATER USAGE AND THE AMOUNT OF POLLUTANTS WE PUT INTO THE AIR AND SOIL. OUR SEEDS CREATE DEEP ROOT SYSTEMS THAT ENABLE THE GRASS TO SOURCE THE WATER AND NUTRIENTS REQUIRED FROM THE SOIL SO THERE IS NO NEED TO USE CHEMICALS OR FERTILIZERS. ALSO, THE GROWN GRASS REDUCES GREEN HOUSE GASES, AND ONLY NEEDS TO BE MOWED ONCE A MONTH AT MOST.
