New Eye Surgery Regulations in Kentucky
September 2011
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
There is a new bill that
would allow optometrists - who are not medical doctors
- to perform eye surgery in Kentucky. Implementation
of the bill requires the adoption of regulations before
the law can take effect. The Kentucky Academy of Eye
Physicians and Surgeons say the proposed regulations,
and the process by which the Kentucky Board of Optometric
Examiners arrived at the regulations, puts Kentucky
patients at risk.
Woodford Van Meter, M.D.,
president of the Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians
and Surgeons says his organization has lodged a formal
complaint against the Optometric Board.
(VAN METER)
THE REGULATIONS ALLOWING
OPTOMETRISTS TO PERFORM SURGERY WERE ADOPTED WITH ONLY
LIMITED PUBLIC INPUT AND SO VIOLATE THE OPEN MEETINGS
ACT. THESE REGULATIONS PLACE PATIENTS AT RISK. LEGISLATORS
REVIEWING THE REGULATIONS SHOULD SEND THEM BACK TO THE
DRAWING BOARD.

the regulations, call your legislators today at 1-800-372-7181.
