Public Attitudes About Foster Care Adoption
November 2007
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
Forty-eight million Americans
have considered foster care adoption, according to a
national survey from the Dave Thomas Foundation for
Adoption. However, nearly half of Americans mistakenly
believe that foster care adoption is expensive, when
there are few costs involved. And two thirds considering
adoption are concerned that a biological parent can
reclaim their child, when after a legal termination
of parental rights, a child is permanently separated
from their family of birth.
Rita Soronen, executive director
of the Foundation, says this confusion may be deterring
potential adoptive parents from foster care adoption.
(SORONEN)
STRONG MISPERCEPTIONS CAN
CREATE BARRIERS THAT KEEP WONDERFUL CHILDREN FROM LOVING
ADOPTIVE PARENTS. IF WE CAN BETTER INFORM POTENTIAL
PARENTS ABOUT THE NEED, AFFORDABILITY AND FINALITY OF
FOSTER CARE ADOPTION, WE CAN CONNECT MORE WAITING CHILDREN
WITH FOREVER FAMILIES. WITH MILLIONS OF AMERICANS CONSIDERING
ADOPTION FROM FOSTER CARE, THERE IS NO REASON WHY THERE
SHOULD STILL BE 114,000 CHILDREN WAITING IN THE SYSTEM.
