(INTRO)
Maintaining health and reducing
the risk of disease is at the forefront of consumers'
minds as they age. New research shows that Americans
cite cardiovascular disease at 46 percent, weight at
32 percent and cancer at 22 percent as their top health
concerns.
Elizabeth Rahavi, RD, Associate
Director of Health and Wellness at the International
Food Information Council, describes the Functional Foods/Foods
for Health Survey.
(RAHAVI)
AMERICANS ARE CLEAR ABOUT
WANTING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF
FOOD. STILL, THEY STRUGGLE TO INCORPORATE THESE FOODS
INTO THEIR DIETS CITING EXPENSE, TASTE AND AVAILABILITY
AS TOP BARRIERS. WE HAVE TO BROADEN AMERICANS' PERSPECTIVE
ABOUT FUNCTIONAL FOODS. WHILE IMPORTANT, IT'S NOT JUST
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. THERE ARE LOTS OF HEALTHFUL COMPONENTS
LIKE SOY, FIBER, WHOLE GRAINS, AND PROBIOTICS IN A VARIETY
OF FOODS AND BEVERAGES THAT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN
OUR HEALTH. LEARNING MORE CAN SET YOU ON A PATH TOWARD
BETTER HEALTH.
