Glaucoma Risk Factors

January 2012

Stations, the following is a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…

(INTRO)

About three million Americans have glaucoma, a leading cause of preventable blindness. In honor of Glaucoma Awareness Month in January, EyeCare America is offering free screenings to eligible participants through its national eye exam program.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Richard Mills says uninsured people who are determined to be at increased risk may be eligible for a glaucoma exam.

(MILLS)

MOST CASES OF GLAUCOMA PROGRESS SO SLOWLY THERE ARE NO WARNING SIGNS BEFORE EYE DAMAGE OCCURS. HOWEVER, IT CAN BE EASILY BE DETECTED WITH A QUICK AND PAINLESS EYE EXAMINATION. WITH TREATMENT, GLAUCOMA DOESN'T HAVE TO INTERFERE WITH A FULFILLING LIFE. RISK FACTORS INCLUDE YOUR HAVING A FAMILY HISTORY OF GLAUCOMA, BEING AGE FORTY OR OLDER, OR IF YOU ARE AFRICAN-AMERICAN OR HISPANIC. IF YOU HAVE ONE OR MORE RISK FACTORS, YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR A FREE EYE EXAM BY ONE OF THE SEVEN THOUSAND VOLUNTEER OPHTHALMOLOGISTS ACROSS THE U.S.
