April 2008
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
The cost of food around the
world is spiraling upward, causing widespread hunger
and triggering riots in cities around the globe. International
aid organization Catholic Relief Services is recommending
the federal government immediately appropriate up to
$900 million additional dollars for the poorest and
most vulnerable, which will allow the United States
to buy the same amount of food aid that it provided
last year.
Bill O'Keefe, senior director
for advocacy of Catholic Relief Services, says that
action must be taken now to address the global food
crisis and avert long-term consequences.
(O'KEEFE)
WE ARE WITNESSING AN HISTORIC
COMBINATION OF FORCES DRIVING UP THE PRICE OF FOOD.
THE ADMINISTRATION AND CONGRESS NEED TO FORMULATE AN
URGENT RESPONSE TO THIS CRISIS THAT ADDRESSES THE IMMEDIATE
NEEDS, AS WELL AS THE LONG-TERM CHALLENGES OF PROVIDING
ENOUGH FOOD FOR ALL PEOPLE SUSTAINABLY. WE MUST SEIZE
THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PREVENT GREATER HUNGER, SUFFERING,
AND INSTABILITY ON A GLOBAL SCALE.
