The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - the nation's largest philanthropy devoted solely to health - asked the public to choose among 20 research articles to determine the most significant studies on health care last year.

The winning article highlights the potential of social media to improve our health. David Colby, vice president of research and evaluation for the foundation, discusses the winners.

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ARTICLE, AS VOTED BY THE PUBLIC, WAS A STUDY CONDUCTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA LOOKING AT THE USE OF TWITTER TO TRACK THE SPREAD OF SWINE FLU ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. OTHER TOP VOTE GETTERS INCLUDED A STUDY SHOWING HOW PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS IN UNDERSERVED AREAS CAN IMPROVE TREATMENT FOR HEPATITIS C. AND ANOTHER THAT LINKED INCREASES IN PUBLIC HEALTH SPENDING WITH LOWER DEATH RATES.
