Innovative HIV Medication Patch

October 2011

Stations, the following is a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…

(INTRO)

An innovative delivery method for HIV medications has been developed using a transdermal patch, the first of its kind to treat HIV. This research is being presented at the 2011 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C. from October 23 to 27.

Researcher Anthony Ham, PhD, from ImQuest Biosciences in Frederick, Maryland, describes the single dose patch.

(HAM)

AS WE ENTER THE FOURTH DECADE OF H-I-V/AIDS, THIS DELIVERY METHOD WILL HOPEFULLY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF PILLS MOST H-I-V PATIENTS HAVE TO TAKE DAILY. THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE TAKING MEDICATIONS REGULARLY REDUCES SYMPTOMS AND EXTENDS LIVES, AND THE PATCH ALLOWS FOR EASIER COMPLIANCE. THE PATCH IS ALSO POTENTIALLY LESS EXPENSIVE TO MANUFACTURE AND SHIP THAN PILLS OR NEEDLES. WITH AN ESTIMATED FIFTEEN MILLION PEOPLE LIVING WITH H-I-V IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND ONLY FIVE-POINT-THREE MILLION WITH ACCESS TO TREATMENT, THIS IS A MORE AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE TREATMENT METHOD.
