THE IMPACT OF HEALTH RESEARCH INVESTMENT
ON JOB CREATION IN ILLINOIS
~ Clinton Global
Initiative in Chicago Will Have Participants Focusing
on Strengthening American Industries ~
June 2011
(Chicago, IL, Tuesday, June
28, 2011) - Scientific research funding impacts every
state by providing jobs and turning today's research
into tomorrow's cures. Now, the Clinton Global Initiative
taking place June 28-29 in Chicago, will have participants
focusing on strengthening American industries, unlocking
capital for innovation and entrepreneurship, and training
the next generation workforce.
A recent poll from Research!America
found that Americans support research - whether federally
funded or privately funded. In fact, 78 percent of Americans
think federal funding for health research is important
for job creation and the economy and 61 percent say
accelerating our nation's investment in research to
improve health is a priority.
The financial impact of research
funding saves billions of dollars for Americans in the
form of new, more effective, more affordable ways to
treat and prevent illness. For example, current estimates
suggest that the polio vaccine has saved our economy
upwards of $180 billion in treatment costs.
To address specific data
to the Illinois area, and what research means for the
state, Mary Woolley, president and CEO of Research!America
will discuss:
-
How much federal funding Illinois receives from
the NIH and the CDC - important economic drivers
for global health R&D and the state;
-
Where Illinois ranks as bioscience employers in
the U.S. and how many bioscience jobs are generated
from investing in research;
-
How much NIH invests in the state and what that
means in new state business activity;
-
What improvements in Illinois inner city population
immunizations have shown;
-
How much economic impact the University of Illinois
system has on the state economy and how many jobs
it generates statewide; and
-
The combined economic impact of medical schools
and teaching hospitals in the state and its total
employment impact in the state.
