inTransition Program for Service Members

August 2011

Dear PSA Director,

Transitions in military service can be challenging. Any transition - a call to active duty, relocation or other event - can take a toll. Service members presented with such transition challenges while receiving mental health treatment may need extra resources.

The inTransition program provides coaching support for service members receiving mental health treatment. It is designed to make sure service members are given the necessary resources to maintain treatment gains, connect with an ongoing provider and achieve positive health outcomes.

To help educate service members, veterans, National Guard and Reserve members and their families about its coaching resources, the inTransition program has launched a public service announcement campaign.

inTransition coaches are master's-level behavioral health clinicians who understand today's military culture and issues. They can provide telephone coaching on how to change providers at the time of transfer or discharge; provide referral support and new provider follow-up; and provide crisis intervention when necessary. Coaches are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are accessible from any location.

To help service members in your area, please place these PSAs in heavy rotation through September 21, 2011. For more information on the inTransition Program, please visit www.health.mil/inTransition or call their confidential, toll-free number at (800) 424-7877.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Heuer

FACING A CHANGE OF STATUS CAN BE CONFUSING FOR ANY SERVICE MEMBER. CALL TO ACTIVE DUTY, RELOCATION, DISCHARGE - THEY ALL HAVE THEIR CHALLENGES. BUT WHEN A SERVICE MEMBER IS ALSO RECEIVING MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT, THE CHALLENGES MULTIPLY. THE INTRANSITION PROGRAM CAN HELP. SERVICE MEMBERS RECEIVE A PERSONAL COACH, WHO CAN OFFER ACCESS TO IMPORTANT RESOURCES AND ENCOURAGE THE SERVICE MEMBER TO START AND STAY ON TRACK WITH THEIR NEW PROVIDER.

I DIDN'T TELL ANYONE, BUT I WAS CONCERNED. I COULD TELL. WHEN HE GOT HIS NEW ORDERS AND WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TO MOVE, WE ALL WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD DO TO HIS TREATMENT. IT TOOK REAL STRENGTH TO SEEK MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THERE I WAS HAVING TO START WITH A NEW PROVIDER. THEN MY DOCTOR REFERRED ME TO THE INTRANSITION PROGRAM. MY INTRANSITION COACH HELPED ME IDENTIFY RESOURCES I NEEDED IN OUR NEW LOCATION. AND MADE SURE THAT HE STARTED AND STAYED ON TRACK WITH HIS NEW PROVIDER.
