(INTRO)
The shoe bomber, the Madrid
mastermind, and the London transit ringleader all adopted
Islam in prison. Radical Islam has spread in Europe,
but will this militant mindset become "homegrown" in
the U.S.? The documentary special Homegrown: Islam in
Prison, part of the PBS Series America at a Crossroads,
examines the crucial question whether U.S. prisons are
incubators for radical Islam and terrorist ideology.
Steve Denny, former FBI agent
and member of the Joint Terrorism Taskforce, describes
recruitment by radical Muslims.
(DENNY)
PRISONS ARE GOING TO PLAY
A ROLE, JUST AS ANY FERTILE RECRUITING GROUND FOR JIHADISTS
PLAYS A ROLE. WHEREVER THERE IS A MARGINALIZED POPULATION,
AND I MEAN ANYWHERE, THEY'RE GOING TO BE RECRUITING
IN THAT AREA. Imam John Muhammad, chaplain of Jackson
State Prison, says reports of radicalized Muslims are
exaggerated.
(MUHAMMAD)
I HAVE NOT FOUND OR SEEN ONE
INCIDENT OF PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH ANY TYPE OF RADICAL
ISLAM.
(CLOSE)
The documentary airs nationally
on PBS on Monday, November 26 at 9:00 p.m. (Check local
listings).
