RESOURCES FOR THOSE NEWLY DIAGNOSED
WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES
~ Living With Type
2 Diabetes Program Provides Much Needed Information
and Support to Newly Diagnosed Patient When They Need
It Most ~
September 2011
(Washington, D.C.) – In 2009,
the American Diabetes Association (ADA) conducted research
about people’s daily lives with diabetes. Through this
research, ADA found that providers prefer Association
materials for their patients but often do not use the,
because materials were not available free of charge.
Further, patients want information about diabetes from
their provider on the day of diagnosis and prefer that
information be in paper-form.
These findings helped ADA
develop the Living With Type 2 Diabetes program to provide
much needed information and support to the newly diagnosed
patient when they need it most. The program also further
engages program enrollees with the Association and creates
an opportunity for them to become active volunteers,
fundraisers and donors.
At diagnosis, the booklet
Where Do I Begin? is provided to patients who have been
diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This booklet is designed
to provide a high-level introduction to diabetes; answer
many of the questions patients have at diagnosis; invite
patients to enroll in the Living With Type 2 Diabetes
program. All program materials are available in English
and Spanish.
The program includes five
mailed or emailed informational packets at Month 1,
3, 6, 9, and 12 after enrollment. Each packet offers
tools and information on different topics related to
diabetes self-management. There is also an e-newsletter
that offers seasonal tips, inspirational stories, recipes
and more, as well as an online community where members
can join the conversation.
As of July 27, 2011, nearly
300,000 copies of Where Do I Begin? booklets had been
distributed. Nearly 5,000 unique health care providers
have ordered the booklet. More than 35,000 people are
enrolled in the Living With Type 2 Diabetes program.
Patients can enroll by visiting diabetes.org/living,
through calling 1-800-DIABETES or by completing and
returning the Enrollment Form in the Where Do I Begin?
booklet.
