(INTRO)
As debate continues on how
to balance the federal budget and what cuts will be
made, a recent study finds that even a five percent
cut in federal Medicaid spending would reduce funding
to states by nearly $14 billion, hampering economic
growth and job creation across the country.
Bruce Siegel, CEO of the
National Association of Public Hospitals, urges lawmakers
to exempt Medicaid from across the board budget cuts.
(SIEGEL)
MEDICAID PROVIDES ESSENTIAL
COVERAGE TO NEARLY SIXTY MILLION PEOPLE IN THE U.S.
AT LOWER PER COST PER BENEFICIARY THAN PRIVATE INSURANCE.
UNLIKE OTHER FEDERAL SPENDING, MEDICAID IS DEDICATED
SOLELY TO PROVIDING A HEALTH CARE SAFETY NET FOR OUR
NATION'S MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE. WE KNOW THAT IMPROVEMENTS
CAN ALWAYS BE MADE TO MAKE THE PROGRAM MORE EFFICIENT
- GREATER CARE COORDINATION, FOR EXAMPLE, PARTICULARLY
FOR PEOPLE DUALLY ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICAID AND MEDICARE.
BUT ACROSS THE BOARD CUTS WILL HURT REAL PEOPLE.
