Motherhood Issue on October 6 Ballot
October 2011
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
As we head into elections
on October 6, remember a motherhood issue is on the
ballot - sustaining midwifery in Ontario. Next year,
midwives will provide front line primary care for close
to 20,000 mothers and their newborns, or about 14 percent
of all babies born in Ontario.
Katrina Kilroy, president
of the Association of Ontario Midwives, says midwifery
in this province needs political support if it is to
be sustainable.
(KILROY)
ONTARIO MIDWIVES PROVIDE
EXCELLENT CARE TO MOTHERS AND FAMILIES AND REAL VALUE
TO THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM RESULTING IN BETTER OUTCOMES
FOR MOMS AND BABIES. BUT, BECAUSE OF HOSPITAL BARRIERS
AND RESTRICTIONS AND PAY INEQUITY, ONTARIO IS IN DANGER
OF LOSING TRAINED MIDWIVES TO JURISDICTIONS WHERE THEY
ARE HIGHLY VALUED. BECAUSE FOUR OUT OF TEN WOMEN SEEKING
MIDWIFERY CARE ARE UNABLE TO OBTAIN IT, ONTARIO NEEDS
TO RETAIN EVERY ONTARIO-TRAINED MIDWIFE TO ENSURE DEMAND
IS MET.
