Pakistan Behind the Taliban Insurgency?

February 2008

Stations, the following is a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…

(INTRO)

The future of Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf is uncertain in light of the outcome of elections there this week. What will a leadership change in what has been called a key American ally mean for the war on terror and the war in Afghanistan?

Tonight on PBS's Bill Moyers Journal, former journalist Sarah Chayes, who has been helping rebuild Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban regime, says Musharraf's Pakistan is behind the Taliban insurgency.

(CHAYES)

WE'RE PAYING A BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO PAKISTAN, WHICH IS ORCHESTRATING THE TALIBAN INSURGENCY. SO, IT'S ACTUALLY US-TAXPAYER MONEY THAT IS PAYING FOR THE INSURGENTS. IT'S BEEN VERY CLEAR TO ME, WATCHING SINCE 2002, THAT PAKISTAN HAS BEEN BUYING US OFF, BY A WELL-TIMED DELIVERY OF AN AL-QAEDA OPERATIVE, WHICH HAS THEN CAUSED US TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY ABOUT THE TALIBAN.

(CLOSE)

Bill Moyers Journal airs tonight at 9:00 on PBS (check local listings).
