A HEALTHIER NATION: IT'S EVERYONE'S
CHALLENGE!
President's Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports issues the National President's
Challenge on March 20
March 2008
Washington D.C. - The President's
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is launching
the first National President's Challenge-a six-week
physical activity challenge to encourage Americans to
be more active. It kicks off March 20, with registration
beginning March 1.
Many people remember the President's
Challenge, which began in 1966, as the youth fitness
test they did in school. The program is now something
everyone can participate in, including youth, adults,
seniors, and people with disabilities. This is the first
time in its history that the President's Council is
issuing a challenge to all Americans to be active 30
minutes a day, five days a week.
More than 50% of American
adults do not get enough physical activity to provide
health benefits. In fact, 25% of adults are not active
at all in their leisure time. Mayors and governors across
the country will be participating in the National President's
Challenge by urging individuals and families in their
cities and states to join in getting active.
Denise Austin is a nationally
recognized fitness and health expert who has produced
and appeared in over fifty exercise videos. She was
appointed to the President's Council on Physical Fitness
and Sports in 2002. Melissa Johnson is Executive Director
of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports,
and a nationally recognized leader in physical activity,
fitness and health promotion. Andy Roddick of Boca Raton,
Florida and Austin, Texas is the 4th ranked player on
the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour.
He blasted onto the scene in 2003 when he became the
youngest American to end a season atop the ATP Rankings
following his win at the U.S. Open that year. For more
