Anniversary for Religious Freedom
December 2007
Stations, the following is

(INTRO)
The central theme of the holiday
season is religious freedom. This Chanukah, two anniversaries
in the historic movement to free Soviet Jews are celebrated.
In homes and synagogues, American Jews will say a special
prayer to remember their Soviet brothers and sisters
who fought for the right to simply be Jewish.
Mark Levin, Executive Director,
NCSJ, the advocacy group that defends Jews in the former
Soviet Union, explains these commemorations.
(LEVIN)
JUST 20 YEARS AGO, PEOPLE
LIVING IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION WERE NOT FREE TO PRACTICE
THEIR RELIGION OR EMIGRATE. IN 1987, ON THE EVE OF THE
FIRST U.S. SUMMIT BETWEEN PRESIDENT REAGAN AND PREMIER
GORBACHEV, 250,000 AMERICANS RALLIED IN WASHINGTON TO
"LET MY PEOPLE GO!" AND CHANGED THE LIVES OF JEWS IN
THE FORMER SOVIET UNION. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR INVOLVEMENT
IN THAT HISTORIC DAY AND THE STRUGGLE TO FREE SOVIET
JEWRY. TODAY, WE ARE STILL ENSURING THAT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
ENDURES.
