Salmonella Outbreak in Mississippi

December2011

Stations, the following is a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…

(INTRO)

The recent Salmonella outbreak may have brought up questions about the safety of our food. People in our community have become ill; some may have been hospitalized due to the severity of their infections. But what is Salmonella and how can you find out if you have been infected?

Food Safety Attorney Bill Marler describes what consumers should know.

(MARLER)

SALMONELLA OUTBREAKS ARE OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH EGGS AND POULTRY, ALTHOUGH OUTBREAKS HAVE ALSO BEEN TRACED TO GROUND BEEF, FRESH PRODUCE, UNPASTEURIZED DAIRY PRODUCTS, AND FOOD SERVED AT RESTAURANTS. SYMPTOMS OF SALMONELLA INFECTION TYPICALLY BEGIN 6 TO 72 HOURS AFTER CONTAMINATED FOOD IS CONSUMED, AND INCLUDE DIARRHEA, ABDOMINAL CRAMPS, FEVER, NAUSEA, AND/OR VOMITING. ANYONE EXPERIENCING THESE SYMPTOMS IN AN AREA WHERE AN OUTBREAK HAS BEEN REPORTED SHOULD SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.

(CLOSE)

Testing is available to consumers through medical facilities and most local health departments. For more information, visit www.about-salmonella.com.
