~ School Counselors Vital Members of Education Team ~

February 2008

Arlington, VA, February, 2008 - Gone are the days of school counselors sitting in their office simply handing out college applications, making schedule changes for students who want to drop a class or meeting with the troublemakers in the school. Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.

Now, one exemplary school counselor in El Paso, Texas, has been named the top school counselor in America. Tammi Mackeben, a school counselor from Ernesto Serna PK-8 School is one of more than 300 elementary and secondary school counselors nationwide who competed for the title of School Counselor of the Year. The program, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), honors the professionals who devote their careers to serving as advocates and often lifesavers for the nation's students.

Currently the Texas School Counselor's Association Multi-Level Counselor of the Year, Mackeben has introduced of initiatives and programs to promote a college-going culture in a school known as being the most economically disadvantaged campus in the school district. The students at Ernesto Serna School are: 99% Hispanic; 1% White; 89% economically disadvantaged; and 65% are considered by the state of Texas as being "at-risk" of dropping out of school. Despite these challenges, one of Mackeben's greatest accomplishments is changing its PSAT testing protocol by making practice college entrance exams available to all students who wish to participate.

Founded in 1952, ASCA currently has a network of 50 state associations and a membership of more than 23,000 school counseling professionals. For more information, visit www.schoolcounselor.org.
