New research on sex differences
in the brain provides insight for understanding underlying
risk factors of disorders that occur in adulthood. This
research will be presented at the annual meeting of
the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
Dr. Jill Goldstein of Harvard
Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital describes
the potential impact of these studies.

WOMEN'S BRAINS RESPOND TO STRESS MAY BE IMPORTANT FOR
UNDERSTANDING UNDERLYING RISK FACTORS FOR CHRONIC DISORDERS
LIKE DEPRESSION AND CARDIAC DYSFUNCTION. MY COLLEAGUES
AND I ARE STUDYING HOW DISRUPTIONS IN THE FETAL DEVELOPMENT
OF THE STRESS RESPONSE CIRCUITRY IN THE BRAIN HAVE LASTING
EFFECTS ON SEX DIFFERENCES IN ADULT STRESS RESPONSES
IN THE BRAIN THAT MAY POINT TO ROOT CAUSES OF SEX DIFFERENCES
IN DISORDERS LIKE DEPRESSION AND RISK FOR CARDIOVASCULAR
DISEASE.
