Smoking in Movies
July 2011
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
With the summer blockbuster
season in full swing, the CDC has released a new study
in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report showing
that half of Hollywood's major studios have practically
eliminated smoking in youth-rated movies. But other
big-name studios and independents lag behind, underscoring
the need for the film industry to adopt an R rating
for smoking to eliminate smoking in films rated for
kids.
Dr. Ursula Bauer, director
of CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention
and Health Promotion, and a contributing author of the
report, says on-screen smoking is a major factor in
youth smoking uptake.
(BAUER)
THERE HAS BEEN IMPORTANT PROGRESS
TOWARD REDUCING YOUTH EXPOSURE TO ON-SCREEN SMOKING,
BUT DOZENS OF TOP-GROSSING YOUTH-RATED MOVIES RELEASED
EACH YEAR CONTINUE TO PUT OUR YOUTH AT RISK OF STARTING
SMOKING. COMPLETELY ELIMINATING SMOKING FROM NEW YOUTH-RATED
MOVIES COULD HELP PREVENT AMERICA'S YOUTH FROM STARTING
DOWN THE ROAD OF TOBACCO ADDICTION, DISEASE AND PREMATURE
DEATH.
