(INTRO)
Social anxiety disorder can
wreak havoc on the social and romantic lives of 15 million
Americans, leaving them isolated, ashamed and sometimes
misdiagnosed, according to a survey by the Anxiety Disorders
Association of America.
Jerilyn Ross, president and
CEO of the Association, says that the difficulty of
social anxiety disorder, or social phobia, is compounded
by the skepticism that it is a real and serious condition
that is often confused with shyness.
(ROSS)
SEVENTY SEVEN PERCENT OF
RESPONDENTS SAID SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER HAS A NEGATIVE
IMPACT ON THEIR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS, WHEN LEFT UNTREATED.
SOCIAL PHOBIA IS A DEVASTATING DISORDER THAT HAS A PROFOUND
EFFECT ON SOCIAL INTERACTIONS THAT MOST PEOPLE TAKE
FOR GRANTED. IN EXTREME CASES, THE DISORDER CAN DISRUPT
SOCIAL LIVES TO THE POINT THAT PEOPLE MAY HAVE NO RELATIONSHIPS
AT ALL, MAKING THEM FEEL POWERLESS AND ALONE. WHEN PEOPLE
CANNOT CONNECT WITH OTHERS IT MAKES NEARLY ALL AREAS
OF THEIR LIFE HARDER TO HANDLE.
