STATE HISTORY STANDARDS
~ Reviews Available
for All 50 States plus Washington, D.C. ~
February 2011
(Washington, DC) - Presidents'
Day 2011 is right around the corner and an upcoming
study by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute evaluates U.S.
history standards across the nation. The State of
State U.S. History Standards 2011 includes reviews
and grades for 50 states plus the District of Columbia,
highlighting the (few) strengths and (many) weaknesses
of current expectations for learning this crucial subject.
Which states have strong
U.S. history standards and which need major improvement?
The study also includes an appraisal of the U.S. history
framework of the National Assessment of Educational
Progress (NAEP).
The reviews were conducted
by Sheldon M. Stern, an historian, formerly at the John
F. Kennedy Library, Boston, Massachusetts, and Jeremy
Stern, an historian and educational consultant. The
study is the latest in a series of Fordham evaluations
of standards going back to the late 1990s.
