October 2011
(Alexandria, VA) – Diabetes
is a serious disease with deadly consequences. An estimated
25.8 million children and adults in the United States
have diabetes. An additional 79 million Americans have
prediabetes. In fact, every 17 seconds one person is
diagnosed with the disease and if current trends continue,
one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050.
The American Diabetes Association
estimates the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes
in the United States is $174 billion, with one out of
every five health care dollars spent on a person living
with diabetes. Further, studies suggest that when additional
costs for gestational diabetes, pre-diabetes, and undiagnosed
diabetes are included, the costs in the U.S. could exceed
$218 billion.
