Thanksgiving Turkey Options
November 2007
Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
Americans will eat nearly
50 million turkeys next Thursday. Most supermarket turkeys
are raised in large confined animal feeding operations
that pollute our air and water and threaten our health.
Fortunately, there's an alternative to that broken system.
Brise Tencer with the Union
of Concerned Scientists says turkeys that are raised
in crowded, unsanitary conditions do not support a healthy
lifestyle.
(BRISE)
CONSUMERS CAN SUPPORT A HEALTHIER,
MODERN WAY OF RAISING TURKEYS BY BUYING ORGANIC OR LOCALLY
GROWN BIRDS FROM 'SMART PASTURE OPERATIONS' FOR THEIR
HOLIDAY MEALS. TURKEYS RAISED OUTDOORS RARELY NEED ANTIBIOTICS,
AND THEIR WASTE FERTILIZES THE LAND RATHER THAN FOULING
OUR WATER. THE U-S-D-A ORGANIC SEAL ALSO GUARANTEES
THAT A TURKEY HAS NOT BEEN FED ANTIBIOTICS. THIS HELPS
ENSURE THAT THOSE SAME DRUGS KEEP WORKING WHEN PEOPLE
GET SICK. ORGANIC TURKEYS AND THOSE RAISED ON PASTURES
WITHOUT ANTIBIOTICS ARE THE SMART CHOICE FOR YOUR FAMILY'S
HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
