Stations, the following is
a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1…
(INTRO)
Nearly 30 million
Americans, or one in 9 adults, have some evidence of
kidney disease, and another 20 million are at risk.
In conjunction with World Kidney Day, experts are calling
for increased federal funding for kidney disease research
and education to increase awareness, improve lives and
reduce costs.
Dr. Peter Aronson,
president of the American Society of Nephrology - the
world's largest organization devoted to the study of
the kidney - says kidney disease is deadly and all too
common.
(ARONSON)
EARLY DETECTION
OF KIDNEY DISEASE IS NECESSARY FOR TREATMENTS TO BE
MOST EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING KIDNEY FAILURE AND THE
NEED FOR DIALYSIS OR TRANSPLANTATION. UNFORTUNATELY,
MOST PEOPLE WILL LOSE MORE THAN HALF OF THEIR KIDNEY
FUNCTION BEFORE REALIZING THEY HAVE A PROBLEM. AS THE
US POPULATION AGES, THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH KIDNEY
DISEASE AND COSTS OF TREATMENT WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE.
IT'S THEREFORE CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
ACTS QUICKLY TO FUND RESEARCH FOR IMPROVED PREVENTION
AND TREATMENT OF KIDNEY DISEASE.
